Winter Decorating

Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful!

It's true that winter can be cold and dark, but your home shouldn't have to feel sad and lifeless. A few touches here and there will liven up any room, and winter colours, shapes and textures are actually wonderful inspiration. With our decorating ideas, your home will feel snug and warm in no time, and who knows--it might even help the season go by a little faster.

Remember, a number of our Autumn Decorating tips will still be applicable for winter, and for extra whimsy, don't forget to check out our guide to Indoor Christmas Decorations.

Warm Up with Colour

Blacks, whites and silvers naturally recall the chilly days of winter, but don't take this concept too literally.  Find warmer versions of these colours that recall the drama of winter in a hospitable way.

Snow and Ice

Glass candlesticks  are ideal substitutes for the shine and glitter of icicles.

Try a pale blue vase  (aquamarine  or powder blue ) for an icy effect.

Think fire and ice with candles  in soft shades of purple (lilac  or lavender ).

Winter white  looks great anywhere, especially on a chest of drawers

Jewel Tones

A gold runner  is an elegant dressing for your dinner table.

Burgundy bedspreads  mean you'll never spend a cold night.

A rich green lampshade  casts a welcoming glow about the room.

Dark purple is especially striking for drapes and curtains

A chocolate brown throw  is a luxurious way to mimic the trees.

Play with Texture

Again, fire and ice offer the perfect palette for winter decorating.  Soften the cold sparkle of snow and ice with plush and comfortable fabrics--you're sure to stay cosy all season long.
